Seeding Whitfield Estates
Hydroseeding in Whitfield is mostly work on established, older properties. Whitfield Estates was a 682-acre wooded tract, including the 218-acre bayfront estate of Alfred Ringling, bought for development in 1924. The plan called for homes, an 18-hole Donald Ross golf course, a hotel, a yacht basin and man-made islands. Like many boom projects, it fell short, but the streets and many of the houses were built.
Mature trees and shade
Because the land started out wooded and has had a century to grow, many Whitfield yards have big trees. Shade and root competition thin lawns over time. We often suggest overseeding with a shade-tolerant blend, or seeding only the sunny parts of the yard and mulching under the canopy, rather than forcing grass everywhere.
Historic districts
Several districts and properties in the subdivision are on the National Register of Historic Places. Owners restoring those homes often need the yard redone after foundation, drainage or utility work. We handle the yard grading, topsoil and hydroseeding to finish the job.
The golf course and the bay
The Ross course survived the bust, was bought by club members in 1937, became overgrown during World War II and was restored with Army help afterward. It is now Sara Bay Country Club. Whitfield sits on the northeast shore of Sarasota Bay, bordered by Bowlees Creek on the north and the airport on the southeast. Lots near the water or the creek get silt fence during any grading.

Whitfield Questions
Grass will not grow under my oaks. What can you do?
We can overseed with a shade-tolerant blend, but in dense shade a mulched bed may be the better answer.
Can you restore my yard after foundation work on a historic home?
Yes. We regrade the disturbed areas, add topsoil and hydroseed.
Do you need to keep material away from the bay?
Yes. On waterfront lots we put up wattles or silt fence during grading and spray away from the shoreline.
Is overseeding enough, or do I need a new lawn?
If grass covers more than about half the yard, overseeding often works. Below that, a renovation is usually better.
