Seeding Ground in the City of Sarasota

Hydroseeding in Sarasota starts with water: of the city's 24.08 square miles, 9.39 are water, and the rest drains toward Sarasota Bay through tidal creeks and canals. That means most bare soil we spray here is only a few blocks from somewhere the county does not want sediment to end up. A hydroseed lawn gets a mulch layer the same day it is sprayed, which holds sand in place far better than loose seed scattered by hand.

Phillippi Creek and why sediment matters here

Phillippi Creek is a 7.2-mile tidal creek that runs from the Fruitville side of town through Southgate, Pinecraft and Forest Lakes. Its basin drains about 57 square miles, and dredged, straightened channels move water fast. After homes along it flooded in 2024, the county began removing sediment deposits from the creek. For a yard or build lot in that basin, silt fence on the low side and inlet protection on nearby drains are cheap insurance while grass establishes.

The rainy season decides the schedule

Sarasota's climate is humid subtropical, with a rainy season that runs roughly March through November and a short dry season from December to February. Seed sprayed early in the wet months gets steady water but also heavy afternoon storms, so we use a heavier hydromulch rate on anything sloped toward a swale. Dry-season jobs need an irrigation plan from day one.

Older neighborhoods, new construction

Much of the city was platted during the 1920s boom, when the limits briefly stretched to almost 70 square miles before shrinking again. Today a lot of our city work is infill: a teardown replaced by a new house, a regraded yard after a pool or drainage job, or a commercial pad that needs final stabilization before the permit closes. Our grading crews handle yard grading, topsoil and trenching for drainage so the seed goes onto a finished surface.

What we spray most inside city limits

  • New lawn installation on infill lots after construction
  • Hydroseeding swales and retention edges that keep washing out
  • Erosion control blankets on short, steep banks near canals
  • Lawn renovation where an old lawn has thinned to sand

Sarasota Ground Conditions

  • Water inside the city. Of Sarasota's 24.08 square miles, 9.39 square miles are water and 14.70 square miles are land.
  • Phillippi Creek basin. The creek's basin, also called the Roberts Bay North watershed, drains about 57 square miles, and the county is dredging sediment from it.
  • Wet and dry seasons. The rainy season lasts from about March to November, with a dry season from December to February.
  • 1920s boom limits. During the 1920s land rush the city limits reached almost 70 square miles before contracting after 1926.

Sarasota Questions

My Sarasota lot drains toward Phillippi Creek. Does a lawn job here call for silt fence?

For a small yard re-seed, usually not. For a new build or regrade with bare soil sloping toward the creek or a storm drain, we recommend silt fence on the low edge and inlet protection until the grass covers.

Is it better to hydroseed in the dry season or the rainy season in Sarasota?

Both work. Rainy-season seeding needs less irrigation but a heavier mulch on slopes. Dry-season seeding needs reliable watering for the first few weeks.

Can you seed a yard right after a teardown and rebuild?

Yes, once final grade is set. We remove construction debris from the top layer, add topsoil where the fill is pure sand, then spray.

Do you work on Lido, St. Armands and Bird Key lots inside city limits?

Yes. Island lots are mostly sand, so we plan watering and mulch carefully, and we keep material off seawalls and the water.
