Seeding Terra Ceia Island

Hydroseeding in Terra Ceia covers a small, rural island community at the south end of the Sunshine Skyway. Terra Ceia Island is surrounded by Tampa Bay to the north and west and Terra Ceia Bay to the south, and the community includes the 1,932-acre Terra Ceia Preserve. Lots here are larger and more spread out than in town, and almost every one is near water or preserve land.

Farm history

By 1897 Terra Ceia had 127 households, most of them growing citrus, vegetables (especially celery) and flowers. A 1926 storm surge washed over the island and made farming difficult afterward. Some old field ground is still open, and when it becomes a house lot, we break up compacted soil, grade it to drain and hydroseed it for a lawn or a lower-maintenance cover.

Shell mounds and archaeology

Shell mounds built by the island's early inhabitants dot the area, and Hernando De Soto's men camped at the mounds in 1539. Where shell is mixed into the soil, it drains fast, so we use a moisture-holding mulch. If your lot has a known mound or archaeological site, check what is allowed before any grading.

Next to the preserve and bays

With Tampa Bay, Terra Ceia Bay and the preserve so close, sediment control is part of every job that disturbs soil. Silt fence or wattles go on the low side, and banks get erosion control blankets.

Terra Ceia Questions

Can I grade over a shell mound on my property?

Possibly not. Archaeological sites can be protected. Check with the county or state before any grading near a mound.

My lot is old farm ground. Will hydroseed grow well?

Yes, after the compacted layer is broken up and the grade is set. A soil test helps adjust the mix.

Do you seed pasture or open land as well as lawns?

Yes. We can spray lawn near the house and a pasture or native mix on the rest.

How do you protect the preserve during a job?

Silt fence or wattles on the downslope side, no spraying toward wetlands, and quick cover on bare soil.
