Seeding Along Little Sarasota Bay

Hydroseeding in Osprey takes in everything from bayside yards to inland lots on former ranch land. The community covers about 6.1 square miles, around 10 percent of it water, along the shore of Little Sarasota Bay between Sarasota and Nokomis. Most homes here sit on sandy coastal soil with fast drainage and very little organic matter.

High ground on a flat coast

In 1867 the Webb family homesteaded a raised point on Little Sarasota Bay that a trader had told them about, and called it Spanish Point. That site, now the 30-acre Historic Spanish Point, includes a prehistoric shell midden. Higher ground and shell-rich soil are uncommon on this coast. Where a lot has shell in the soil, it drains even faster, so we lean on a moisture-holding fiber mulch and a careful watering plan for new seed.

Ranch and grove land

In 1910 Bertha Palmer bought the Spanish Point homestead along with thousands of acres for cattle ranching, citrus groves and real estate. A lot of inland Osprey was pasture or grove before it became neighborhoods. Former pasture often has a dense root mat and compaction from decades of cattle; we break that up before a new lawn installation so seed has loose soil to root in.

Bayfront care

On waterfront lots we keep hydromulch off the water and install silt fence or wattles along the bay side if the yard has been graded. Short slopes to the water get an erosion control blanket. The aim is grass that holds the bank without sending sand into the bay.

Osprey Questions

My yard has a lot of shell in the soil. Will grass grow?

Yes, but it dries out fast. A topsoil or compost layer and a fiber mulch over the seed help a lot.

Can you seed a short slope down to the bay?

Yes. We use seed under an erosion control blanket on bank faces and keep spray off the water.

My lot used to be pasture. Is that a problem for hydroseeding?

Old pasture can be compacted and full of old roots. We till or rip it first, then grade and spray.

How soon can my family use a freshly hydroseeded Osprey yard?

Light foot traffic is usually fine once the grass has been mowed a couple of times, often four to six weeks in warm weather.
