Growing Grass on Dredged Sand

Hydroseeding in Punta Gorda often means seeding ground that was built by a dredge. Starting in 1959, developers of Punta Gorda Isles cut about 55 miles of canals, 100 feet wide and 17 feet deep, and used the dredged sand to raise the land beside them. Burnt Store Isles followed. The result is thousands of waterfront lots on sandy fill with very little organic matter.

What that sand needs

Dredged sand drains almost instantly and holds few nutrients. A hydroseed lawn on it will sprout, but it struggles through the first dry spell unless there is something to hold water. We usually recommend a thin topsoil or compost layer before spraying, and a fiber mulch that keeps the surface damp while roots form.

Keeping sediment out of the canals

About 28 percent of the city's 21 square miles is water. On canal lots, bare soil and seawall backfill can wash straight into the water. Silt fence or wattles go in along the seawall side before any grading, and we aim hydromulch away from the water.

Peace River and harbor storms

The city sits on the south bank of the tidal Peace River and the east shore of Charlotte Harbor. The Peace River drains a basin of about 2,300 square miles, and its watershed is low-lying with many wetlands and lakes. Charley in 2004 and Ian in 2022 both came ashore here at 145 mph, and many homes were rebuilt to stronger codes. Each rebuild left a yard that needed regrading and grass.

Punta Gorda Questions

Why does grass on my canal lot dry out so fast?

The lot is probably dredged sand. It drains quickly and holds little water. Adding topsoil or compost before seeding makes a big difference.

Can hydromulch get into the canal?

Not if it is applied correctly. We spray away from the water and keep silt fence or wattles along the seawall until the lawn is established.

Do deed restrictions in the Isles limit grass types?

Some neighborhoods have rules. Check yours, and we will match the seed to it.

My yard was rebuilt after Ian and the fill is all shell and sand. Can you seed it?

Yes, but we would cap it with a few inches of topsoil first. Seed sprayed directly on shell fill rarely makes a good lawn.
