Lawns on Siesta Key
Hydroseeding in Siesta Key is mostly small-yard work on a busy island. The key lies between Roberts Bay and the Gulf, and about a third of its 3.5 square miles is water. It is mainly single-family homes and condos, split between the city of Sarasota at the north end and an unincorporated area for the rest. Yards are compact, sandy and close to the water.
Dredged bayous and fill
The first developers, the Siesta Land Company, began in 1907 by platting the north end and dredging bayous and building docks. Lots beside those dredged channels often sit on sandy fill with almost no organic matter. A thin compost or topsoil layer before seeding gives a hydroseed lawn far better odds than spraying straight onto the sand.
After Milton
Hurricane Milton came ashore near Siesta Key on October 9, 2024. Many yards here lost turf to wind, water and the equipment that came in for cleanup. Lawn repair is now a large part of the work: clearing debris, regrading, and reseeding bare patches or whole yards.
Four districts, different conditions
The key is made up of Siesta Beach, Crescent Beach, Turtle Beach and Siesta Key Village. Gulf-side lots take more salt spray and sun; bay-side lots tend to be lower and wetter. We adjust seed choice and mulch accordingly, and keep silt fence or wattles on the water side during any regrading.

Siesta Key Questions
Can you get a hydroseed truck onto a small island lot?
Yes. The hose reaches well past the truck, so we can seed back yards without driving onto them.
Is hydroseeding a good fix for patchy spots after storm cleanup?
Yes. Spot repair with hydroseed blends in well, as long as the bare soil is loosened first.
My yard is white sand. Will seed grow?
It will sprout, but adding some topsoil or compost first makes a much healthier lawn.
Do bay-side and Gulf-side yards need different seed?
Often. Gulf-side yards need more salt and sun tolerance; lower bay-side yards may need something that handles wetter ground.
