Small Lots, Lots of Shoreline
Hydroseeding in Nokomis works on a small scale. The census area is only about 1.9 square miles, and nearly 16 percent of it is water. Shakett Creek and Dona Bay separate it from Venice, and Casey Key sits just offshore. With that much shoreline packed into a small town, a lot of our work here is about keeping sand and seed where they belong.
Streets from a 1917 plan
In 1917 Dr. Fred Albee and Ellis Nash bought 112 acres and divided them into 130 lots, with streets radiating from two inner circles and the new asphalt road that later became U.S. 41. That layout gives odd-shaped yards, wedge lots and narrow curbside strips. Hydroseeding handles irregular shapes better than sod, because there is nothing to cut and fit.
Creek-side yards
Yards along Shakett Creek and the Dona Bay shore drain straight to tidal water. When we hydroseed those, silt fence or wattles go along the water side if soil has been disturbed, and steeper banks get straw blankets with seed under them. A good root mat is the best long-term erosion control on a creek bank.
Casey Key and the Legacy Trail
Casey Key, the barrier island to the northwest, is lined with large beachfront homes and is not part of any census area. About 2.5 miles of the Legacy Trail run through Nokomis, including the bridge over Shakett Creek. Both bring construction and landscape work: island homes need salt-tolerant seed choices, and lots near the trail often get regraded as properties change hands.

Nokomis Questions
Do you work on Casey Key properties?
Yes. Island lots are pure sand with salt exposure, so we pick salt-tolerant seed and plan irrigation carefully.
My lot is a strange wedge shape. Is hydroseeding a good fit?
Very much so. Spray covers any shape without cutting, which saves waste on irregular yards.
Can seed be sprayed right up to the creek?
We stop short of the water and protect the edge with a blanket or wattle. Work in or below the water line is a separate permit question.
What is the best time of year to seed in Nokomis?
Late spring into summer gives the fastest growth. Winter seeding works with good irrigation but fills in more slowly.
