Lawns and Erosion Control in Port Charlotte

Hydroseeding in Port Charlotte often follows a storm or a new foundation. The community sits at the north end of the Charlotte Harbor estuary and was laid out in the 1950s by the General Development Corporation. It is now the most populous place in Charlotte County, and new homes keep filling in older platted lots.

Two major hurricanes in 18 years

Hurricane Charley hit as a Category 4 storm on August 13, 2004, destroying almost half the homes in the county and damaging sensitive wetlands. In 2022, Hurricane Ian passed through again, with the eye crossing southeastern Port Charlotte. Rebuilt homes and cleared lots mean bare ground, and bare ground near the harbor means sediment control matters.

Wetland edges and canals

About 12 percent of the community's 32.3 square miles is water, much of it canals and harbor shoreline. Lots next to wetlands or canals need silt fence or wattles before grading and a strong hydromulch coat after seeding. Where a bank is steep, a straw erosion control blanket over seed holds better than mulch alone.

Summer storms, mild winters

Port Charlotte's climate borders on tropical, with long hot summers, frequent afternoon thunderstorms and a clear drop in rain during winter. Summer seeding gets plenty of water but needs protection from runoff; winter seeding needs a watering plan. We adjust mulch rate and seed mix to the month.

Port Charlotte Questions

My lot backs onto a canal. What erosion control do I need during construction?

Silt fence or wattles along the canal side, kept up until grass covers. After seeding, a blanket on any slope down to the water.

Can hydroseed handle Port Charlotte's summer storms?

Yes, if the mulch is applied at the right rate and the grade sheds water. On slopes we use bonded mulch or blankets.

Is it worth seeding in winter here?

Warm-season grasses grow slowly in cooler months, so winter seeding takes longer to fill in and needs irrigation. Spring through summer is faster.

Do you clear storm debris before seeding?

We clear the surface debris needed for seeding and regrade. Large debris removal is usually a separate job.
